Hate those stickers all over your laptop? Good news: So does AMD

September 2nd, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Tech
Log of AMD

Image via Wikipedia

I hate all those stickers on the palmrest of laptops.  On PC cases as well for that matter.  It’s almost as bad as the stickers ricers put all over their cars.

They wear off, get dirty, and the $1 per hour staff at the manufacturing facility can never get the damn things on straight – even when there are lines or bars on the plastic to line them up against!

Luckily, my Alienware rig has the stickers on the bottom, so the laptop looks clean and nice.

AMD also dislikes this practice and is discussing either making the stickers easy to remove with no residue or possible disbanding the nasty habit altogether.

Ubisoft: We’re too scared to make new video games, so here is Splinter Cell 29…

Ubisoft Managing Director Alain Corre told GamesIndustry.biz in a recent interview that:

“The games that are not triple-A are not profitable anymore…  To a certain extent it becomes less risky to invest more in a single game or franchise than spreading your investment between three or four games,”

Apparently, Corre goes on to explain that this has all changed in the last 18 months.  Which is odd because I am certain Ubisoft has been milking it’s franchises for much longer than that.

Maybe their games would see better sales if they didn’t have that shitty DRM built in that forces you to be online all the time?  What do you think about that Mr. Corre?  I know that I am not willing purchase Assassins Creed or Splinter Cell or even any of your triple-A titles anymore.

Obama Administration: Piracy == Theft

September 1st, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Tech, Your Rights Online
Official presidential portrait of Barack Obama...

Image via Wikipedia

According to US Commerce Secretary Gary Locke the Obama Administration is going to go after pirates and reform copyright.

“As Vice President Biden has said on more than one occasion, ‘Piracy is flat, unadulterated theft,’ and it should be dealt with accordingly.”

No, Gary. It’s not. How do these idiots get so highly placed in government? This man needs to be removed from office for reasons of clear mental incapacity.

Piracy is not theft. The act of theft by its very definition implies the taking of property without consent and with intent to deprive the owner of its use. Copying a song over P2P does not remove the original, no one is deprived, and it is done with consent of the owner of the file. Filesharing is no different from making someone a mixtape. Just because the actions are on a larger scale and take place on the Internet do not mean it is theft.

Also, last I heard, the music industry and Hollywood are still doing pretty well.

I have no problem going after commercial pirates who are selling counterfeit copies of goods on a large scale, but we need to spread the message that non-commercial filesharing is not theft.

Lastly, if you are in the music business to make money – chances are you aren’t making good music anyway.

Microsoft raises price of XBOX Live subscription

Xbox Live logo since 2005

MS has put up the price of a year subscription to their online gaming service by 10bucks a year starting this November.  I really don’t understand why MS even charges for their XBOX Live ‘service’.  They are not hosting servers, all the data is carried by users’ ISPs… so why do they need more money?  Server CPU, storage and bandwidth costs have all dropped, not increased.  Shouldn’t this ‘service’ be getting cheaper? I can’t wait.  So stay tuned here for info and pictures from PAX.

Craigslist ad for ‘PAX Nerd Orgy’ bombs, turns into a sausage party

Penny Arcade Expo

An ad placed on Craigslist for ‘a bunch of us like minded adults to get together in a hotel room and have a friendly adult party’ is bombing big-time.  Why?  Because even though the male:female ratio at PAX is better than any other gaming convention it is still heavily slanted towards men.

No surprise then, the poster of the ad has had to provide an update asking for more women or couples to ask for an invitation.

“Update: Getting too many responses from single males, so will not be accepting any more for now. If you are a single male and you already replied, I need to see what we have for couples and single females before you get an invite. No single males have an actual invite yet.”

Duh… No matter if you put mw4mw on your ad, most of the people going to PAX are dudes.  And chicks that would be interested in orgies, probably don’t want to have them with a group of sweaty chubby nerds.

Do iPhone owners have more sex? No.

Illustration of Extrapolation. The red points ...

Image via Wikipedia

Dating site OK Cupid did a study where they took a look at the camera that took profile pictures on their website and related that to the dating history on the website for those users.  Not exactly good science, or even sound statistical analysis (Correlation != Causality) but nevertheless their extrapolation from that dataset was that iPhone users have more sex than other phone users!!!

Bullshit.  This only means that hipster loser douche-bags that are clueless enough to buy iPhones also can’t keep a steady girlfriend.  Perhaps iPhone users are narcissistic assholes who will do anything to look cooler than they actually are.  You could just as easily determine from the data that iPhone users are having sex and they are terrible at it and their partner dumps them.

Or, maybe their antennas are dropping the call the next day. ;)

FBI spending more money and time on copyright violations than missing persons

August 11th, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in Your Rights Online
The FBI Seal where the circle of stars represe...

Image via Wikipedia

You know that show ‘Without a Trace’?  The one about the FBI Missing Person’s task force?  I didn’t know that the FBI actually did that kind of work, but they do.  I also didn’t know that Big Media have pushed the feds with all their lobbying dollars to create a copyright enforcement task force and to devote more time, money and resources tracking down who is uploading a shitty camera copy of Dinner With Shmucks to Justin.tv.

Copyright Infringement should be a civil issue between the 2 parties, but currently these cases at the FBI are seemingly more important than fraud and missing persons – you know, where people’s actual lives are forever affected.  Wired’s Threat Level blog breaks down the current backlog of processing  DNA from missing persons crime scenes where homicide may have taken place.  Couldn’t the FBI be spending their time a little better?

Also, putting FBI seal on the top of this article for the lulz.

29yr old heralded as Tetris World Champion

Tetris

Image via Wikipedia

All these years that the game Tetris has been around they have never held an event to crown a world champion – until now.  Jonas Neubauer, 29, from California won a recent tournament in Los Angeles, California held by http://tetrischampionship.com/.  Even Alexey Pajitnov, the Tetris creator was there to watch over 200 players compete for the title.

I’m awesome at Tetris, too bad I never heard of this beforehand…
